That is not to say, of course, that the encomienda system was in any way superior to the British system. The Indians had no more choice in their indenture than the Africans did in their slavery. In both cases, a small number of European colonists found ways to exploit the labor of people whom they did not recognize as their equals. As the colony grew, and land became scarcer, the colonists began pushing further and further west. A series of treaties forged alliances with certain Native American tribes against others, or against possible conflicts with Spanish or French colonists. Trading relationships also opened up between colonists and natives. Yet the colonists clearly had the upper hand, with imported diseases killing thousands of Native Americans and the better-armed colonists pushing the survivors off their land.
